10 Things Every Husband Should Do For His Pregnant Wife

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Pregnancy can be a wonderful and yet very challenging time. Though you may think that you are doing everything you can for your pregnant wife, there are some extras that can really make her feel special.

  1. Help with the household chores. One of the best things that a husband can do for his pregnant wife is to help out with the household chores. This is particularly important for those chores that can be hazardous such as changing the litter box or breathing in potentially harmful chemicals. Take the load off of her and help her avoid any potential harm.
  2. Keep her stress level to a minimum. Even if you can feel an argument coming on, do your best to avoid it. Help her to avoid knowingly stressful situations or put her into the line of stress. It’s not worth it for her own well being and certainly not to that of your unborn child.
  3. Be sure that she gets plenty of rest. Pregnancy can be exhausting, and one of the best things a husband can do is allow his wife to get plenty of rest. Give her opportunities for naps, be sure that you set her up for a good night of sleep, and help to lessen her load so that she can relax and unwind a bit.
  4. Help with any other children or pets in the family. Since pregnancy can be so taxing in and of itself, any additional responsibilities can seem magnified. Any help that you as a husband can offer in terms of other children or pets can be tremendously appreciated. Offer to take them off their hands and let them rest whenever possible to be a good partner.
  5. Pamper her for no reason at all. Every woman likes to be pampered now and then, and this can be especially true during pregnancy. Offer to draw her a bath, give her a massage, or do something that makes her feel like royalty. Pampering can go a long way to a pregnant woman!
  6. Reassure her how beautiful she looks in her pregnant state. There comes a point in every pregnancy where a woman doesn’t feel so beautiful. Be there to tell her how she glows and how beautiful you think she is. Help her to see that she’s still the same woman, but that pregnancy has made her even more beautiful in your eyes.
  7. Ask her what you can do to help. Sometimes just asking what you can do to help her or be there for her can go a long way. This can help to lessen her workload, offer support, and generally just let her know that she has a partner. She may not need anything at all, but by you asking you make her feel better almost instantly.
  8. Listen to her if she gets emotional and needs an outlet. Pregnancy brings out all sorts of hormones and emotions, and therefore your wife may be subject to mood swings as a result. Even if she seems illogical at times or if you can’t understand why she’s crying, just be there for her. Be her shoulder to cry on, support her, and just listen as she vents to you about what is bothering her at the moment.
  9. Treat her to things that are special to her. If she likes to go out to dinner, then by all means make arrangements to take her out as frequently as you can. If she likes pedicures, then make an appointment for her. If there are certain foods that she likes, then pick them up from the store for her. These little measures can really make her feel special and are so easy to do.
  10. Be there for her appointments, birthing classes, and anything else that she needs. Being a good supportive partner means being there for every step of the pregnancy. Be present at whatever appointments that you can be, be an active part of birthing classes, be there for whatever sort of activities she would like your involvement in. This keeps you involved and ensures that you make her feel good at the same time.

Being there for your pregnant wife can be difficult at times, but is so very important. If you want to keep her happy and make for a smooth pregnancy, these suggestions can really go a long way.
